BACKGROUND:Here.

PERSONALITY: Ogata's existence is grounded in the mystery that surrounds and permeates every aspect of his being. A multiplicious man of many faces, he does not share who he is with others, not even the reader of this series.

He is defined by one word, first and foremost: sniper. Sharpshooting is his livelihood, if not his life in of itself. It's the one constant he's ever known. Ogata has been shooting since he was a child, hunting ducks to provide for him and his family in their meager household out in rural Ibaraki. The son of a geisha and a military general who had hailed from what was deemed a "noble" bloodline, only one of Ogata's parents had been willing to claim him, and the woman's mental state had deteroriated to the point of nonresponse throughout the years. Everyday, she had cooked an inexpensive dish known as anglerfish nabe, claiming that Ogata's father had loved it. She would feed it to their household in hopes that he would return for her. It hadn't mattered how many ducks Ogata shot for her, or how much game he brought to her feet — she would never entertain the thought of cooking anything else, let alone acknowledge what he had done.

She had been completely broken down. So one day, Ogata had slipped rat poison into the hotpot, hoping that his father would come to see her at her funeral and that her one and only wish would be fulfilled.

He didn't.

It was this moment that allowed Ogata to realize that love, just like faith, was an illusion. It was fickle and so prone to slipping through your fingers. It had the capacity to exist only in your mind and wear you down into nothing. Perhaps it was Ogata's love for his mother, which had never been returned, that broke his mind the same way hers had been. They refer to him as "Yamaneko", Ogata the Wildcat, in an attempt to shame him for his lineage. A Wildcat is a deragatory slur for a wanton geisha, after all — but Ogata does not protest or reject his title. He is a prideful man, to the point of self destruction, and if there is one thing he has ever truly loved, it was the woman who he was titled after.

These are secrets hidden deep within him, however: his capacity to love, feel and hurt like any other human being. Ogata presents himself as calculating and cold to the point of numbness; it's easy to mistake him as entirely unfeeling, and he wants nothing more and nothing less. However, in truthiness, Ogata is a deeply emotional individual who attempts to absolve himself of vulnerability at every and any turn. There is nothing he fears more than being "seen" — as a sniper, he is permitted to lurk in the shadows, to track and hunt his prey from afar and exploit their humanity, never to reveal his own. He does not want to be understood, nor does he desire human intimacy and relationships.

Except he does. He simply doesn't want the vulnerabilty that comes with being a human being.

Ogata smiles when he is hurt. He does not cry out in pain even as someone is attempting to beat him into a bloody mass. When he loses, he laughs. In spite of it all, he is angry, untethered, and both terribly violent and volatile. Ogata is relentless but not wasteful: he is willing to kill whoever he must, but he would rather injure someone terribly and demoralize them so that they are left with the burden of having lost against him. Cruel, ruthless, sadistic, calculcating, and Machiavellian to his core, Ogata is by no means an amiable or "pure" person.

But that doesn't mean that he lacks a conscience, even if he would like to market himself as such.

Ogata has detached himself from the ability to feel "guilt" in an attempt to avoid his own humanity — but after having murdered his own half brother, he canonically struggles with hallucinations of him and is prone to projecting him onto others in the most vulnerable of moments. He claims that "so long as you have a reason to kill, you won't be plagued by a guilty conscience" implying that he has the capacity to feel guilt, but will do anything in his power to narrowly evade it; sometimes, he can't. And it destroys him, just as it would any other human being.

More notably, however, Ogata is renowned for his cat-like features. To put it simply, he is the kind of man to walk across your desk, knock off your cup and papers, and then lie on your bed as though nothing had ever happened.

POWERS/ABILITIES: He's just a really, really good sniper.

INVENTORY: His rifle, his uniform, his cloak, ammo.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis. Cat ears. It's a given.
